San Rossore Hippodrome, Italy 3 December 2023
After six years, Antonio Efisio Pinna reclaimed victory in the year-end listed race for Arabian thoroughbreds aged 4 and over, now known as the Tower of Pisa Cup (formerly Meydan Cup). This time, not only as a jockey but also as a trainer. The strong Polish pair, Rasmy Al Khalediah and Wasmy Al Khalediah, were favored, with Rasmy being the winner of the same race in 2022. However, Rasmy didn’t perform at his best, and Wasmy surrendered in the decisive stages.
Mario Sanna strategically placed Dubainulese third on the rope behind the Poles. In the final stretch, Sanna pushed Dubainulese on the outside, overtaking the struggling Wasmy. Despite the anticipated competition, Dubainulese secured victory in the finish area. Rasmy, who was expected to perform well, faced challenges, and further behind, Abu di Gallura claimed third place.
At the award ceremony, Antonio Francesco Mellino, the breeder of the victorious 4-year-old Dubainulese, joined Pinna. The horse, born from Divamer and Oliena by Veinard, achieved its 5th victory in 6 races, with the only defeat occurring in Pisa during its recent return after six months of competitive inactivity. Pinna shared that Dubainulese’s journey from Sardinia faced potential cancellation due to challenging sea conditions, adding a unique flavor to the victory in Pisa. Pinna also noted Dubainulese’s distinct character, capable of impressive displays, such as walking up to 50 meters on its hind legs in the morning outings.
